Debate team closes out competitive year

On March 31, Manual’s debate team competed in the Wilson Wyatt debate championship, their last tournament of the year, at Manual High School. Kate Garrett (11), a varsity LD debater, won the championship round.

The debate team finished with an overall 167-142 record for the year.

At regular Tuesday and Thursday practices throughout the school year, debaters received instruction on debate topics and technique. “At the beginning, we talked about what we should debate on and then moved to how we should debate individually,” Ryan Shah (10) said.

Though the season is over, the team will not go all summer without practice. “I plan on going to debate camp and to improve my debate skills and quality,” Owen Cardwell-Copenhefer (9) said.
