Boys tennis team wins opening matches of the season

The duPont Manual’s varsity boys tennis team won its first 4 matches of the 2012 season, defeating Butler, South Oldham, Covington Catholic, and Collegiate high schools.

Coach Tim Smith (Spanish) attributed the victories partially to the new composition of the team. “Our team is senior-heavy this year,” Coach Smith said. “I’d say we’re the second best team in the state, next to St. Xavier.”

“We should be competitive during the season,” Trey Setser (10), a player on the Varsity B team, said. “We’re overall the second best team in the state and we should do well in the state tournament at the end of the year.”

The boys focus on what they can do better in hopes of being the best in the state. “We mainly need to work on consistency,” Jay Kumar (10), a Varsity B player, said. “Coach sometimes says we play too soft.”

The varsity team is split into two sub-teams, varsity A and varsity B, while also having a JV team. Varsity A practices 5 times a week, while Varsity B practices twice a week with Varsity A.
