As part of 55,000 Degrees, a project aiming to increase the number of college graduates in the Louisville area, the celebration “I’m Going to College 55K Signing Day” will take place this Saturday, May 31, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage.

Mayor Greg Fischer is sponsoring the celebration and declared May 31 “College Spirit Day.” Fischer is sponsoring the event in order to encourage high school seniors to go to college and get a degree by offering them a place to connect with other high school seniors and meet with colleges for more information.

Central High School senior LaNia Roberts collaborated with Mayor Fischer to organize this event.

“The signing is for all high school seniors going to college; not only for athletics, but for academics,” said Roberts. “And it’s a great way to wrap up your senior year.”

The celebration will include music, representatives from colleges such as University of Louisville, Spalding University and Murray State University, and free food from Texas Roadhouse. Students are also encouraged to use #ig2c for pictures and anecdotes throughout the day.

“The most important thing is to find something that you’re passionate about. If you get a degree in that, and find a job related to that, you”ll never have to work a day in your life. But the facts are you’ve got to get a college degree,” said Mayor Fischer.
