Louisville hosted the 10th annual Zombie Attack last Friday, Aug. 29 near Bardstown road. The walk, which began at 8:29 p.m., is, according to its website, “the world’s largest annual zombie walk.”

The walk began at Bardstown Road. and Eastern Parkway, as well as Mid City Mall, and ended at Highland Taproom.

Louisville Zombie Attack started in 2005 as a way for two friends to celebrate their birthday, but has quickly become a prominent part of Louisville culture.

“It has turned into something way bigger than we have ever imagined,” cofounder Mike Welch said.

At first, the walk was intended to be a small flash mob near the Hideaway bar. However, after handing out fliers, roughly 85 people arrived at the celebration. The next year, nearly 200 people showed up, which quickly grew to 20,000 people in the following years.

“Some people really got into their characters which I really liked, but some people were just Bardstown hipsters,” said Allison Blevins (11, YPAS).

The free walk was arranged by Welch and residents John King, Lyndi Lou. It provided its guests with musical entertainment, makeup assistance and costume contests.

“It was a fun way to hang out with friends and showcase other people’s creativity,” first-time attendee Chris Mura (11, J&C) said. “The neighborhood came together around an uncommon theme.”

Before the walk began, there was a pre-party at The Back Door bar and grill, at 6 p.m. There were also booths and more activities set up for families to participate.
