JCPS cancels school for the first time this year

JCPS cancelled school on Monday, Nov. 17 due to “inclement weather.”

The first snow day of the school year comes almost a month earlier than last year’s first snow day, which was on Dec. 6, 2013. JCPS officials said they believe this is the earliest school has been cancelled for a snow day, according to a tweet from WDRB education reporter Toni Konz.

“We always come back to safety. We always ask ourselves that question: can we get kids to school and from school safely?” JCPS Chief Operating Officer Michael Raisor said in a video from the Courier-Journal last winter. “When we keep school open and there’s a little snow on the road or in the neighborhood… we realize that people are going to think that we made the wrong call. And I respect that, and we hear that, but we always come back to safety.”

Although JCPS cancelled school for Monday, the rest of the week is scheduled to proceed as normal. Snow days do not alter the Red/White day schedule, meaning that Tuesday, Nov. 18, will be a white day.

JCPS was closed for 11 days last year, and there is no steady trend in the number of snow days in the years before.
