Spring break is approaching fast, and while many people are traveling with friends and family to beaches, campgrounds and foreign countries, lots of students are staying home. Manual RedEye has a few fun tips for those of us enjoying a spring break “staycation.”
Spring break at the Louisville Zoo
The Louisville Zoo is a spectacular place to experience and walk around. They provide a handful of family-friendly options like fantastic views, exciting animals, and delicious food. You can also pack a picnic lunch and relax while watching Qannik, the zoo’s polar bear.
The zoo is open from 10 am to 5 pm throughout the duration of spring break, and teenagers pay $16.25 for admission. For more admission details and questions, visit the Louisville Zoo Website.
Spring break at Waterfront Park and the Walking Bridge
Louisville is home to Waterfront Park, an amazing place to spend time with your family. Options varying from concerts, food, and activities can be found all throughout this area (check the official schedule for more details). The walking bridge is especially nice for a more personal evening filled with bustling views of Louisville and Indiana.
There aren’t a lot of restaurant options around the waterfront on the Louisville side except Joe’s Crab Shack, but Indiana has several good choices, including the Olive Leaf Bistro, Cluckers, and Big Four Burgers.
Another fun-filled activity to enjoy while in the downtown area is going to a Louisville Slugger game. The Bats are going to be playing in their season opener against the Columbus Clippers, Thursday, April 6 starting at 7:05 pm. This will be a “Friday Night Firework” show for the Sluggers.
The ticket price will vary by seat and section offered. At the Box Office Tickets Website, tickets start at $28 and go up from there.
Spring break with your Eno in the park
A recent, popular, trend among high school and college students is the tree hammock. Enjoying a day of spring break in a park with your family or friends can only get better when a tree hammock is involved. Only do this activity if you’re ready for a mysterious adventure filled with relaxation.

There are also other brands brands on Amazon that are less expensive than the Eno brand hammocks.
Spring break at the Speed
The J.B. Speed Art Museum, a fun Louisville landmark to visit, is walking distance from Manual. The Speed closed for renovations in 2012 and re-opened in 2016.
The Speed is open Wed-Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Manual students can get free admission to the Speed with their student IDs, but if you’re taking a non-Manual friend or family member, admission will cost $8-$12 — but it’s free to everybody on Sundays.

Spring break at 21c
Like The Speed, the 21c Museum is another fun-filled museum with lots to do while walking around. It is downtown on West Main St. across from the Louisville Science Center. Unlike The Speed, 21c is a free museum that is open 24/7.
The Museum features different exhibits throughout the year, and the current exhibits are The Future is Female, Interventions: Re-framing the Print Image, Fallen Fruit: The Practices of everyday Life, 21c at 10: A Global Gathering, Asleep in the Cyclone, David, Wheel of Fortune and 21c Art Channel. Spring break in the Highlands and NuLu
Bardstown Road is a great place to relax with friends, go walking, eat and shop. There are 108 different restaurants ranging from dine in to takeout or carryout. It also has diverse options for shopping, if that’s your thing.
NuLu, also known as the East Market District, also has many restaurants and places to eat and shop. A fun place to go that will test your skills is Climb NuLu, an indoor rock climbing experience located at 100 East Market Street.
Prices start at $15 for new members one day pass, and for returning climbers it is $10 a for a day pass. If you decide to make a habit out of climbing, your day pass can count towards a membership. More information can be found at Climb NuLu’s website.
Spring break with Netflix
Some people will use spring break to catch up on Netflix shows and movies. You may not know there’s a list of secret cheat codes that lets viewers type in custom URLs to find certain genres of film to choose from. The list will be helpful if people finish shows and don’t know what to watch. Here’s how it works: type in “www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXX” and replace the “XXXX” with the number from the list. So, for example, if you’re a Clive Owen fan, you’ll use www.netflix.com/browse/genre/3787, but if romantic comedies from the 1980s are your thing, you’ll use www.netflix.com/browse/genre/1980. Of course, this only works in a browser and not with Netflix apps.
