The duration of Red/White Week, as well as other school-sanctioned events, have the ability to happen because of the students and staff who go behind the scenes to support them. Throughout the year, students carry out loads of preparation to promote these events each week. Executive Council and individual class Steering Committees are responsible for accomplishing these tasks and sponsoring school-wide events.
What is Steering Committee?
Steering Committee is a club made for each individual class to fundraise, make posters and do other class-related activities throughout the year. Each class holds their own meetings and make their own decisions for their particular class.
While at a Steering Committee meeting, you might make posters, discuss fundraising options, plan out class events or decorate for Red/White Week. The school assigns each class a designated hallway to decorate for Red/White Week.
All meetings will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Freshman
The freshman class (class of 2022) holds meetings on Mondays in Ms. Marina Gutierrez’s (Spanish) room (310). The class sponsors are Gutierrez, Ms. Jacqueline Scoones (English) and Mr. Mark Chaddic (ECE). The class does not elect class officers this year and meetings are solely based on the want to participate. The freshman class will create a base of fundraising for their next three years for events like junior and senior prom. The sponsors will run these meetings. The club members will make posters and help start fundraising.
Sophomores
The sophomore class (class of 2021) holds meetings on Mondays in class sponsor Ms. Rebecca Raley’s (Family Consumer Science) room (323). The school will hold class officer elections at the end of the year, for more information see Ms. Raley. The sophomore class will go more in-depth for fundraising goals and become more involved in school events. This will be led by Ms. Raley and student participation is necessary for success. In sophomore Steering Committee, participants may make posters and plan/host events for class fundraising.

Juniors
The junior class (class of 2020) holds meetings on Fridays in Ms. Margaret Mattingly’s (English) room (251B). The class sponsors are Mattingly, Ms. Becky Slagle (English) and Ms. Jill Bickel (English). As a result of elections last school year, Patrick Harper (11, J&C) is the class of 2020 president, along with several other class officers. The junior class dives into school spirit through posters and other decorations. As prom is approaching, the juniors rush to fundraise through car washes and restaurant nights. Each meeting is led by Harper and the other officers, who plan out most of the behind-the-scenes details. In junior Steering Committee meetings, participants may make posters or be involved in discussing upcoming class events.

Seniors
The senior class (class of 2019) holds meetings on Mondays in Center Hall of the third floor by class sponsors Mr. Chris Applegate (Math, 320) and Ms. Laura Spiegelhalter’s (Family Consumer Science, 325) rooms. The class president is Oliver Weber (12, MST) and there is a slate of elected officers as well. After already having a prom, the senior class needs to recollect themselves and get started to aide Senior Prom. Each meeting is led by Weber and the other officers who organize the club as a whole. in senior Steering Committee, participants may paint posters, decorate for Red/White Week or plan for fundraising throughout the year.

What is Executive Council?
Executive Council (EC) is a more whole-school focused version of Steering Committee that makes decisions about spirit week, pep rallies and dances. Compared to Steering Committee, EC is a more focused and intensive weekly time dedicated to preparation for these events.

If you were looking to join the EC, it is a great experience for connecting with other people and gaining a greater sense of school spirit, leading others to be more involved in their school.
Compared to the loose rules of Steering Committee, EC has stricter rules of attendance. You are only allowed one absence per semester, making sure there is always participation. If you have three or more tardies or miss bigger events, you will be removed from the club.
The sponsors for EC are Mr. Tyler Morris (Math) and Spiegelhalter.
EC meets every Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Spiegelhalter’s room. Applications for EC will be offered in the spring.
