This past Thursday, May 1, the Lady Crimsons’ varsity lacrosse team faced off against the Sayre Spartans, resulting in a disheartening 20-3 loss.
First Quarter:
The Spartans gained momentum as soon as the game began. They scored their first goal within 30 seconds, and several more goals in the first quarter afterwards, starting the game off with a strong lead.
However, this was broken up by a goal from Ava Schickel (#16, 10). Immediately after, Sayre picked up their offensive momentum and scored again. Manual called a time out with four minutes remaining. The Lady Crimsons were able to get the ball after the draw, and they held onto it for some time before it was stolen by the Spartans.
While Sayre stayed close to Manual’s goal, they were met with a strong defense and goalie Shaina Silliman (12, #51) caught more than a few shots. Shortly after, the Spartans scored another goal, bringing the score to 8 to 1. Morgan Schmidt (12, #9) then got the ball after the draw, and ran with it down the field towards Sayre’s goal. The Spartans stole it back, though, and quickly scored again. Following the draw, Brooklyn Goodwin (11, #4) got the ball and hurled it to Leah Niemann (12, #53), who attempted to score. However, time ran out while Niemann still had the ball near Sayre’s goal, and the quarter ended with a score of 9 to 1 in favor of the Spartans.
Second Quarter:
Shortly into the start of the second quarter, one of the Spartans was fouled. Soon after, they scored their tenth goal. The Spartans were fouled again, and scored not long after.
After the draw, the Spartans got the ball, and despite an attempt by Silliman to block it, they scored again. The Spartans stayed close to the goal, but Hayden Moore (10, #10) helped keep them at bay until they managed to score again.
The Spartans attempted yet another goal, but missed. They quickly regained possession, but Liza Kallik (#42, 11) was able to knock the ball away from the Spartans. The ball went flying, and Sayre scooped it up but failed to score a goal. Not long after, they scored again. This brought the score 14 to 1. Bea Davis (11, #5) attempted to steal the ball, and then Kallik chased the Spartans away from the goal.
Jasmine Smith (#8, 11) managed to get possession of the ball, but lost her hold on the ball, which allowed Sayre to pick it up. Moore intercepted the Spartans, but a whistle was blown, signaling a foul, and the ball was returned to Sayre. Despite this, the Lady Crimsons chased the Spartans down as they ran towards Manual’s goal. Then, Peyton Reed (#6, 10) was injured and was substituted out to get checked out. Moore got the ball and passed it to Kallik, who ran down the field. Kallik then passed the ball to Smith, who got fouled. The Lady Crimsons managed to stay near Sayre’s goal for some time, but the Spartans ultimately regained possession and scored again.
The first half ended with a score of 15 to 1, in favor of the Spartans.
Third Quarter:
Sayre got the ball after the draw to start the third quarter, and scored 20 seconds into the third quarter. They made another goal soon after. Schmidt took possession, and passed it to Moore. Moore was fouled, but was unable to score. Sayre took the ball back and sprinted down the field. Harleigh Beumer (#26, 12) got the ball and passed it to Kallik, who then passed it to Goodwin. Goodwin rushed toward the goal, but had the ball stolen from her.
The Spartans scored again, bringing the score to 18 to 1. Schmidt chased after the ball during the draw, but the Spartans got to it first. They tried many times to score, but the Lady Crimsons had tightened their defense and Silliman blocked several goals. She passed the ball to Sam Cole (#13, 11), but the Spartans got it back. However, they were unable to score, and Schmidt got the ball just as time ran out.
The quarter ended with a score of 18 to 1 in favor of Sayre.
Fourth Quarter:
Moore fought the Spartans for the ball, but they managed to run around the goal area for some time. Davis and Peyton Reed (#6, 10) maintained good defense, and Sayre passed the ball. Silliman caught the ball as it neared the net, and passed it, but Sayre got the ball back again.
Schmidt then took possession and passed it to Sammie Haden (#27, 12). She attempted to score and came close, but missed. Sayre got the ball back and scored again, bringing the score to 19 to 1. Schmidt was able to gain possession of the ball once more and passed the ball to Haden. Haden was able to score, bringing the score to 19 to 2.
Sarudzai Charasika (#11, 11) then got the ball a little while later and passed it to Haden, who tried to score but was ultimately blocked. The Spartans regained possession and scored again. However, Charasika managed to steal the ball and score Manual’s third and final goal of the game. Schmidt then got the ball, but time ran out before she could try and score.
The game ended in a loss for the Lady Crimsons with a score of 20 to 3.
