This past week, May 29 through May 31, Manual’s boys’ and girls’ outdoor track and field teams competed in the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Lexington. While Manual’s girls’ team was not able to reclaim the state title and trophy for a fifth consecutive year, they were able to capture fourth place, earning 52 total points, with a showcase of talent led by HSU senior Alex Allen.
Allen, who is committed to run for the University of Memphis, placed first in the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 56.12 seconds. Allen also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash and second in the 100-meter dash.
Other notable finishes for the girls’ team came in the 1600-meter race, where Maggie May (12, VA), a WKU commit, placed fifth and Emerson Wyatt (12, MST), a Vassar College commit, placed eighth. Bailee Montgomery (11, HSU) placed fourth in the girls’ 3200-meter race, while Erica Geer (11, HSU) finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles for the girls’ team, as well.
The girls’ relay team finished ninth in the 4×100-meter relay, fourth in the 4×200-meter relay and fourth in the 4×800-meter relay, too, marking three top-ten finishes out of four total relay events.
To wrap the events up, Favor Odebowale (11, MST) finished in sixth place in the girls’ long jump, and placed fifth in the girls’ triple jump.
On the boys’ side, Sam Chandler (12, HSU) finished tenth in the boys’ 1600-meter race, Quincy White (12, HSU) finished tenth in the long jump and Kaelem Muhamedziev (10, HSU) placed eighth in the triple jump.
With the loss of an extremely well-rounded and talented senior class, the track team will no doubt come back next year faster than ever before, with the girls’ team looking to reclaim the state trophy and the boys’ team looking to put on an even greater show.
