VA Seniors enter competition at St. James Art Fair

Ten VA seniors portfolios are entering the St. James Court Art Show Scholarship Competition in hopes of receiving scholarships to any college of their choice. The competition will take place October 5-7 downtown at the St. James Art Fair.

The students selected to enter the competition were Lutricia Crowder, Wyatt Wasz Piper, Quin Stone, Liza Samuel, Eli Cook, Bowen Sung, Tori Rodgers, Irene Mudd, Isaac Logsdon, and Landon Pantoja.

The scholarships available range from $1000 – $5000 to any school the student chooses. There are five different categories in which students can enter, although VA teachers can only select two students to enter per category. The five categories are 3D Sculpture, Two-Dimensional Painting, Mixed Media, Photography, and Printmaking. Each student was required to submit a five-piece portfolio containing only drawings, paintings, and mixed media pieces. The deadline to turn in the portfolios of each student to the gallery is September 25th.

“Every artist needs an audience with which to share their visual communication,” said Cindy Young, VA teacher who was on the selection committee. “St. James Court is a wonderful venue or stage to do just that,” Young said.

According to students, the competition can cause stress in their lives. “Yeah I didn’t sleep and I wore the same outfit every day and never took it off,” Liza Samuel (12) said.
