VA senior art exhibitions rescheduled to encourage attendance

For years, seniors in the Visual Arts magnet have showcased their art in the first floor VA annex’s Norma E. Brown gallery. Tradition has been to hold the seniors’ exhibitions and receptions from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. after school.

This year, to encourage attendance to the shows, the scheduled time has changed to 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.

“I’m really excited for the new show times,” Chris Meyer (12) said. “I think students and teachers who have never attended an exhibit will be very impressed with what we’ve done.”

Along with the new times, this year the shows will take place on the first Thursday of almost every month. Students who hope to attend can mark the dates for the first Thursdays in November, December, February, March, April and May.

“Each year the visual art seniors are required to create a senior show – something the students dedicate a majority of their time to until the date of their exhibition,” Ms. Julie Tallent (Visual Arts) said. “We always have a good turnout, but this year my idea was to be inclusive of the whole school community, and to give everyone the chance to come and see the artwork VA students have been devoting so much time and effort to.”

The Visual Arts magnet is hoping that this time change will make attending the art shows convenient for both students and teachers, and cause an even better turnout than in years past.

“I’ve never been able to see a senior show because the times have always conflicted with my schedule,” Jordan Bride (11) said. “But now that they’re right after school, I’m definitely planning on attending the next one.”
