The faculty learned of Manual P.E./health teacher Ms. Sarah Miller’s death Monday evening at 7:25 p.m. in an email from Principal Darryl Farmer
In the email, he wrote: “It is with extreme sorrow that I bring this news to you. […] Please keep Sarah’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Mr. Farmer gave no information about the cause of death in the initial email.
Farmer held a faculty-only meeting Tuesday morning to compile a grief counseling plan for students and staff. Later that same day, he sent an email to parents explaining the situation.
On Thursday, Manual’s administration announced that there will be a ceremony to honor Ms. Miller on Saturday, April 20 at Cave Hill Cemetery at 2 p.m. Attendees will gather at the main entrance of Cave Hill and proceed to the site of the ceremony together.
“In lieu of flowers, the family will be setting up a Scholarship fund through our Alumni office. Details forthcoming,” Mr. Farmer said in the email to Manual faculty.
“The whole situation really impacts everyone,” Lawrence Mason (11, HSU) said. “Almost everyone has taken her class at some point and saw how great of a person she was to others.”
When they learned of the news, some Manual juniors decided to wear black and bring flowers to Miller’s classroom.
“It’s the least we can do to honor her,” Mason said. “She was an amazing person and my prayers go out to her family and everybody else who’s lives she touched.”
Chris Brady, a member of the JCPS Board of Education, announced through Twitter that the district will send a crisis response team to Manual on Tuesday “for anyone wanting support during this difficult time.”
