On Friday and Saturday afternoon, Manual’s indoor track and field team competed in the Eastern Indoors at Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center. The meet proved successful for the team with many of the Crimsons placing within the top 10 to 20, and posting personal records in their respective events.
The Eastern Indoors has three levels of competition for the high school level. The first level is freshman competition, which is reserved for ninth grade runners. The second level is open competition, where any runner can participate. The third level is varsity invite competition, which is reserved for the top-level runners who have achieved varsity status and been specifically invited based upon past results and times.
To start off with the freshman competition, during the women’s one mile, sisters Allison (9) Multerer (9) and Abigail Multerer (9) placed second and sixth with times of 5:32.68 and 5:39.12, respectively. On the men’s side, Collin Liu (9) posted a time of 5:18.61.
Next, during the open competition portion of the meet, quite a few Crimsons placed within the top 10 or near, with some even coming in first place in their respective events.
For the men’s 60-meter dash, Corey Warner (12) placed seventh with a time of 7.37 seconds, a personal record. Evan Owens (11) placed eleventh in the same event with a time of 7.43 seconds, a personal best for him, as well.
For the women’s 60-meter dash, Favor Odebowale (11) placed fifth with a personal record of 8.43 seconds.
The Crimsons finished well within the ranks during a couple other open events, including the men’s 200-meter race, where Quincy White (12) placed eighth with a time of 23.99 seconds. Kate Hunter (11) and Emina Queen (11) finished in seventh and ninth places, respectively, in the women’s mile, too.
Ingram Quick (12) then finished third in the men’s shot put, throwing for 11.03 meters, his personal record. For the women’s shot put, Edna Kapitan (12) and Lola Ford (9) captured ninth and tenth places, respectively, with Ford throwing her personal record. Kaelem Muhamdziev (10) captured first place for the mens’ long jump, jumping 5.89 meters, his personal record. On the women’s side, Odebowale captured first place, jumping 4.39 meters.
Moving on to the varsity invite competition, there were many more entries and competitiveness among all events. During the women’s 60-meter dash, Alex Allen (12) placed twenty-third with a time of 7.94 seconds.
For the men’s mile race, which had 69 competitors, Sam Chandler (12) and Tedi Henderson (12) both posted respectable times, including 4:27.61 for Chandler and 4:37.67 for Henderson. On the womens’ side, which had 71 runners, Maggie May (12) placed twelfth with a time of 5:08.08. Madison Price (10) also placed twenty-fifth in the same race with a time of 5:12.48.
For the long jump, Trent Claypool (12) placed sixth, jumping 6.33 meters, his personal record. White also competed in the same event where he placed tenth, jumping 6.12 meters.
Manual’s 4×200 relay teams on the men’s and women’s sides set personal records, as did the women’s 4×400 relay team and both the men’s and women’s 4×800 relay teams.
Despite fierce competition across all levels of competition, Manual showed great determination and grit. Their next meet is on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Norton Center for the JCPS Indoor Championships.
