On November 15, students from the Journalism and Communication (J&C) magnet will go to the National High School Journalism Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

According to trip coordinator and teacher Ms. Liz Palmer (Photojournalism, Desktop Publishing, Yearbook), J&C students will have the opportunity to learn from journalism professionals and teachers from award-winning journalism programs. Manual students will also compete indesign, videography, photography, writing and broadcasting contests.

“We need to be strongly competitive nationally so that our students will have an edge in their college programs and careers,” said Ms. Palmer. She believes that the convention will allow J&C students to get a fresh perspective and that they will leave conventions stronger and more energized.

J&C student Kinsey Ball (11) is attending the convention in hopes of expanding her skills. “It will benefit me mostly in my photography because of the workshops and contests that will be provided there,” said Ball.

In addition to convention activities, students will visit tourist attractions in San Antonio such as the Alamo, the Riverwalk, and Hemisfair Park. Josh Svoboda (10) was most excited about haggling for goods at El Mercado, the largest outdoor Mexican market in the United States. “I really like Spanish, so I hope there are a lot of people speaking it so I can see if I understand it,” said Svoboda.
