Ms. Alesia Williams, the sponsor of the book club, will hold the next club meeting Friday, Nov. 30 in room 352 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The book club, which typically meets near the end of each month, will discuss the book “The Shadow of the Wind,” a 2001 novel written by Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
According to Ms. Williams, books are chosen using a book kit from the Louisville Free Public Library. She makes suggestions and then holds a voting system in which students vote for the book they would most like to read. Students make recommendations as well.
Book club can be entertaining, but also serves a purpose to its members. “It is mostly for pleasure because these students already love to read, but the impact it does have is to get them to read books they might not otherwise read,” she said. Any student who enjoys reading should join book club. “It helps them stretch and grow as readers,” said Ms. Williams.
“My favorite part about book club is the fact that I get to discuss a book that I really like with other people, and I get to eat free snacks while doing so,” Sarah Johnson (10) said.
Approximately one million copies of “The Shadow of the Wind” have been sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books of all time.
