Last Wednesday, Manual’s FBLA team produced 24 winning projects at the state competition, 14 of which advanced to the FBLA National Leadership Conference this June in Anaheim, California.
Of the nearly 60 Manual students who competed, 43 were a part of a winning project, while 21 contributed to a project that qualified for nationals.
This level of success is typical for the Manual team, according to team sponsor Mr. Todd Eastridge (Business). “We usually qualify 25 to 30, so it’s in the ballpark. It’s getting a little harder to qualify students, as FBLA is growing in the state,” Mr. Eastridge said.
According to Mr. Eastridge, the state has added between five and eight new FBLA chapters in the past year, where schools such as Ballard have increased their membership to nearly 400. He also expects close to 10,000 participants in the national competition, compared with 2,000 at the state level.
Nonetheless, Mr. Eastridge is satisfied with his team’s performance. “It’s always good to be registered in that many events and winning that many trophies, generally having our name called a lot,” he said.
Despite the high number of students who qualified, only seven plan on actually attending the National Leadership Conference.
“It’s not worth the cost of going,” said Naethan Mundkur (12), who’s project placed 2nd in the Global Business category. “We’d be spending over $1,000 with a high probability of not placing,” Mundkur said.
Freshman Richard Gunasena shares a different view, as he plans on attending the conference. “I thought it would be a good experience. I had fun at state, so I assume I will at nationals as well. I also may not have the chance when I’m older,” Gunasena said.
Mr. Eastridge was also impressed with team’s maturity as they dealt with the hysteria surrounding the University of Louisville’s Men’s basketball team winning the NCAA tournament. The hotel was located downtown, and the team watched as several celebrations erupted in the streets below.
“I was happy with how they conducted themselves after the game that night. Our kids celebrated the appropriate way, and they all made it back in their rooms before the midnight room-check,” Mr. Eastridge said.
