St. Xavier shuts out Varsity Boys’ socccer

St. Xavier defeated the Manual Varsity boys’ soccer team 4-0 on Thursday night at Tiger Stadium.

After a mostly even first half, midfielder Zach Vititoe was able to score on a header to put the Tigers up early.

The first half ended with both sides surviving several offensive attacks, and the score remained 1-0.

In the second half, the Tigers were able to pull away after Trent Stigler stole the ball from the Manual defense and scored just 4 minutes after the break.

Less that five minutes later the Crimsons’ defense again surrendered possession to Joe Workman who was able to chip the ball over Manual goalkeeper Andrew Hagan (#00,10).

The score remained 3-0 for much of the game, although the Manual offense had several scoring opportunities.

Then, with nine minutes remaining St. Xavier forward Brad Woodlee received a through ball from midfielder Sam Raque to score yet again, putting the icing on the Tigers victory.

“I’m not totally disappointed in the result,” said Crimsons forward Hunter Guthrie (#5,11). “It wasn’t necessarily part of the game plan to let them control the pace as much as we did, but we did plan on playing defensively and we felt comfortable letting them take over. I feel like we gave them a challenge.”

The loss brings the Crimsons’ record to 5-7-1. They next face South Oldham on Saturday.
