The duPont Manual Varsity boys’ lacrosse (0-1) team lost its season opener to Kentucky Country Day (1-1) by a score of 13-8 on Tuesday night at Manual Stadium.
The Crimsons started off the game with a quick goal by attackman Greg Healy (#2,12) off of an assist from midfielder Jackson Payton (#5,11) in the first minute of play.
After several saves by Manual goalie John Biggs (#50,11), the Bearcats finally found the back of the net and even the game at 1-1.
Attackman Ben Speelman (#19,12)scored another goal for Manual in the closing seconds of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, KCD controlled most of the possession , as the Bearcats went on a 6-0 run and left the Crimsons trailing 7-2 at halftime.
Speelman opened the half on a high note for Manual, scoring from 20 yards out.
After two more KCD goals, attackman Nick Brewer (#6,10) scored the unassisted goal and another seconds later to bring the score to 9-4. Brewer would score two more times in the fourth quarter, with his first career hat trick.
Junior attackman Brenton Wolford (#10,11) finished the game with three assists.
After midfielder Alex Reczek (#42,11) scored after an assist from Braxton Dewey(#12,11), the Crimsons ended the quarter trailing 11-5.
Both teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, with fairly even possession.
“I thought it would be much closer than it was,” said midfielder JohnRoss Gribbins (#17,11). “KCD is a good team and I hope we play them again.”
“We just weren’t prepared,” said Dewey. “With only one coach this year, it’s tough to get all the work in and specialize by position and skill level.”
First year Manual head coach James Lee declined to comment on his team’s performance.
Manual moves to 0-1 on the season, and drops 6 spots in state rankings to 24th. The Crimsons next take the field this Friday at Christian Academy-Louisville.
