The purpose of the event, according to its Facebook page, is to demand that Congress create jobs for fixing infrastructure.

“Millions of Americans are out of work. More than 68,800 bridges have been rated structurally deficient across the country and some – like the Sherman Minton – have already been closed,” reads the Facebook page. “Let’s put politics aside, fix our infrastructure and create jobs now!”

The event was organized by the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a federation of several dozen unions, which is sponsoring similar rallies in different cities and states.

The event’s publicist is Sandy Knauer Morgan, who also organized the original Occupy Louisville movement. “Our country is crumbling. We could put a lot of people to work repairing it and we’d all be better off for that. Of course, that means we have to go into debt to get the work done. But, then, we get tax dollars back from those workers and they spend what they make, helping out other businesses,” she said.
