The freshman boys’ basketball team defeated Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL) on Monday night with a final score of 63-49.
The game started with CAL getting the first point, but the Crimsons were quick to take the lead. The Crimsons had multiple rebounds, most notably between Will Thompson (#30, 9) and Jonathan Newby (#2, 9).
When Newby missed, he caught the rebound and passed it to Thompson who scored. Thompson also scored the most points in the first quarter with 11.
The game was close throughout the entire first quarter and at the end of the quarter the score was 20-12, with the Crimsons in the lead.
The score increased to 22-15 within the first minute of the second quarter. Malachi Towns (#3, 9) had an eventful second quarter, scoring multiple free throws and getting various rebounds.
The team’s dominance allowed the Crimsons to gain a lengthy lead of 17 points, 36-19, by the end of the first half.
“I feel like we rushed some of our shots so we can work on that,” Thompson said.
At the start of the second half, CAL attempted to make a comeback but it wasn’t enough to catch up with the Crimsons. Newby stole the ball, shot and missed but Thompson got the rebound, making the score 44-24, with four minutes left in the third quarter. These examples of teamwork were visible throughout the third quarter.
“We still could have done some things defensively like rotate a little bit better,” Head Coach Evan Reed said.
After tricking CAL’s defense, Noah Price (#15, 9) scored. The score was 60-49 in the last two minutes and Price attempted to make another shot but missed. The rebound was caught by Towns who missed his first shot before securing another 3 points for Manual. Manual took the win 63-49.
“For the whole part of the season, they’ve been taking care of business doing what they supposed to do,” Reed said.
The next freshman boys’ game will take place at Manual against Fern Creek at 6:15 p.m. on February 5.
