This past Wednesday night Manual’s varsity field hockey team fell to the Assumption Rockets, 4-0.

First Half:

The first half of the game started out with Assumption gaining possession and after multiple back and forths across the field, Manual got their first corner. Kinsley Yerkes (#8, 10) attempted a shot on the Assumption goal, but was ultimately knocked away.

In return, Assumption’s offense took the ball up the field towards Manual’s goal. They then had several attempts on the goal off corners, but they were strategically blocked by both Manual defensive players and goalie Alice Thomas (#63, 11).

Yerkes (#8, 10) ended up receiving the ball a while later and had another attempt on Assumption’s goal, but the shot went wide.

“Just stay patient on the ball and just disrupt the play,” Yerkes (#8, 10) said about her mentality during the game. “[We need] to play smart and make good decisions.”

In the beginning of the second quarter, Assumption’s Monica Piccioli (#7, 11) had a high shot in the air, but it was  blocked by the Crimson’s goalie, Thomas (#63, 11) for another save.

The Manual offense did have several opportunities to score, but ultimately fell futile. Lola Kopp (#5, 12) attempted a shot on goal and Stella Shuman (#16, 10) fought for the ball with the Rocket’s goalie, but they ultimately couldn’t score.

Shortly after, the first half of the game ended. The score was  0-0.

Second Half:

The second half of the game started out with a goal by the Rockets. Assumption’s Emma Winkler (#6, 9) passed across the Manual goal to Lauren Campisano (#32, 12) who shot the ball, making the score 1-0, with Assumption in the lead.

Assumption’s offense continued to shoot attempts on Manual’s goal including Piccioli, (#7, 11) who shot the ball in the air that was again blocked by Thomas (#63, 11).

But even with the Manual defense holding off the Rockets, Assumption’s Winkler (#6, 9) eventually passed to Cosi Karleski (#22, 12) who had a shot on goal and scored. Karleski’s (#22, 12) goal made the score 2-0.

The Rockets ended up breaking through Manual’s defense once again when Piccioli (#7, 11) had a long shot on the Manual goal that went in, allowing Assumption to increase their lead to 3-0.

In response to the Rocket’s goals Manual’s goalie, Thomas (#63, 11), stayed strong, having multiple blocks on the incoming shots, as well as Kopp (#5, 12) who passed the ball upfield towards the offense on multiple occasions.

Towards the end of the game, the Rockets shot their fourth and final goal of the night. Assumption won 4-0.

The Lady Crimsons’ varsity team play their next game on Monday, Sept.  9th against  Mercy at 4:30 p.m.
