On Wednesday night, Manual’s wrestling team hosted senior night as they took on Male and Atherton. They defeated Atherton by a score of 69-12, and fell to Male, with a final score of 42-38.
Before the match, the team held a ceremony to honor their nine athletes and senior managers. Alesha Thorn (12, YPAS), Logan Seng (12, HSU), Mia Roberts (12, HSU), Marcell Malone (12, HSU), Dallas Jennings (12, HSU), Will Jezorski (12, HSU), Gabriel Habeeb (12, HSU), Camara Carter (12, HSU), and Menelik Neal (12, HSU), were recognized for their time with the team.
“It was so bittersweet… I had a lot of fun. I’m definitely going to miss it and I love the team and hope it continues to grow,” Carter said.
The meet was set up in a round robin format, where each team faced off against the other two separately. First, Manual matched up against Atherton. They won many decisive victories, with Devin Allen (11, HSU), defeating his opponent within the first period of the match. Atherton also forfeited many matches to the Crimsons, who ended up winning by a final score of 69-12.
Shortly after, Manual faced Male in the battle for the barrel lid. It was a very close matchup in which there were matches held for all fifteen weight classes. Allen had another decisive victory, defeating his opponent from Male by a score of 6-0. Jezorski also claimed an 18-12 victory after a long, back-and-forth match. Despite many thrilling victories across the weight classes, Male eventually defeated Male by a score of 42-38, the closest score of the night.
“For the team, I’ve learned that you have to work as a family to succeed individually and I’ve really cherished that throughout my wrestling tournaments,” Carter said.
The Crimsons will travel to Franklin County High School this Saturday, Jan. 18, to participate in a tournament with 22 other teams.
