Black women have always served on the front line of the fight for equality, yet their contributions are often overlooked in the Civil Rights Movement. Their strength, resilience, and unwavering courage have been instrumental in shaping progress, making it essential to recognize and honor their pivotal role in the struggle for justice.
2024 was a year of trials, challenges, and tribulations. In honor of Black History Month, we must recognize the Black women who have profoundly impacted this year, shaping history and inspiring change for future generations.
Angela Alsobrooks
Angela Alsobrooks is an American lawyer and politician who has served as Maryland’s junior United States Senator since 2025. As a member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as the Executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland, from 2018 to 2024, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position in the state’s history. In 2024, she ran for the U.S. Senate to replace retiring Senator Ben Cardin and made history as the first African-American woman elected to the Senate from Maryland. She is also the second woman ever to represent the state in the Senate.
Kamala Harris
Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President in 2021, marking the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected into this position. Her election represented a monumental shift in American politics, breaking long-standing barriers and offering a powerful symbol of progress. As Vice President, Harris has been a steadfast advocate for a range of crucial issues. She worked to protect women’s reproductive rights, leading efforts to ensure that women have the autonomy to make decisions about their bodies. Harris also championed the fight against gun violence, working alongside lawmakers to push for stronger gun control measures to keep communities safe.
Quinta Brunson
Quinta Brunson continued to make a significant impact in 2024, solidifying her position as a trailblazer in entertainment and activism. As the creator, writer and star of the critically acclaimed series “Abbott Elementary,” Brunson’s work in television has garnered widespread recognition and also sparked important conversations about representation in the media. Brunson’s influence extends to her advocacy for more inclusive and diverse narratives, especially for Black women in the entertainment industry.
Simone Biles
Simone Biles continued to inspire and dominate the world of gymnastics in 2024, further cementing her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Her remarkable achievements, both on and off the mat have made her an iconic figure in sports. In 2024, Biles returned to competition after a brief break and showcased her mental resilience, demonstrating her commitment to excellence. Biles has also become a powerful advocate for mental health, speaking openly about her struggles and pushing for better mental health support for athletes.
Dawn Staley
Dawn Staley continued to leave a profound mark on the world of basketball in 2024, both as a coach and a leader. As the head coach of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, Staley has further solidified her legacy by leading her players to continued success, including championship contention and national recognition. Her strategic mind, empowering leadership style, and commitment to developing athletes on the court and as people have her set apart as one of the most respected figures in collegiate sports. Off the court, Staley has been an influential advocate for diversity, equality, and the advancement of women in sports. She has consistently spoken out against disparities in pay and opportunities for women in athletics.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé continues to be a global force in 2024, redefining what it means to be an artist, entrepreneur, cultural icon, and activist. Her influence remains unparalleled, in music and beyond. With her unmatched vocal ability, innovative performances, and dedication to her craft, Beyonce has continued to dominate the entertainment industry, breaking new records and setting standards that inspire artists worldwide. As a businesswoman, Beyonce has proven that she is a master of strategy and self-empowerment. Through her Ivy Park brand, music releases, and partnerships, she has created and grown new avenues for Black women in business and fashion, offering a model for success that integrates artistry, entrepreneurship, and activism. She is also known as the most-awarded artist in Grammy history, with a haul of 35 total Grammy wins.
Ketanji Brown-Jackson
Ketanji Brown Jackson made history in 2022 as the first Black woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, a groundbreaking moment that resonated deeply across the nation. Her confirmation marked a significant step toward greater diversity and representation within the highest court in the land. Justice Jackson is a brilliant legal mind, offering insightful perspectives in cases that touch upon civil rights, criminal justice reform and individual freedoms. In 2024, Justice Jackson’s influence has only grown. She has become a role model for young women, especially Black women inspiring them to pursue careers in law and public service
Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson continued to shine as a powerhouse in 2024, building on her legacy as an award-winning actress, singer and advocate. From her early breakout performance in Dreamgirls to her recent accomplishments, Hudson has proven herself as a vocal powerhouse and also as a force for change in the entertainment industry. Hudson has made significant strides as an advocate for social justice, particularly in issues related to mental health, body positivity and women’s empowerment. She has used her platform to address the challenges faced by marginalized communities, especially Black women, and advocates for more inclusive representation in the arts and beyond.
Yara Shahidi
Yara Shahidi continued to make an indelible impact in 2024, blending her talents as an actress, activist and entrepreneur to inspire change and promote social justice. Known for her role on Black-ish and its spinoff Grown-ish, Yara has grown into a powerful voice for her generation, using her platform to advocate for issues such as racial equity, gender equality and educational access. Yara is committed to addressing systemic inequities, especially in the realms of education and political participation. She founded Eighteen x 18, an initiative designed to encourage young people to register to vote and become active participants in shaping their communities and their futures.
Anita Erskine
Anita Erskine continued to make a significant impact in 2024 as a renowned media personality, entrepreneur, and advocate for women’s empowerment. Known for her work as a broadcaster and television host, Erskine has become a powerful voice in Africa, especially in the areas of culture, lifestyle and social issues. She has hosted numerous influential programs that highlight the stories of women, promote local talents,t and address pressing societal concerns. Erskine’s influence, however, extends beyond the entertainment industry. She is deeply committed to empowering women, particularly in African communities, through her advocacy and initiatives that promote financial independence, education, and leadership opportunities. Her ability to raise awareness about issues such as gender equality, women’s health, and self-empowerment has made her a prominent figure.
Lisa Blunt Rochester
Lisa Blunt Rochester made significant strides in 2024, continuing her impactful work as a trailblazing politician and advocate for her community. Rochester represents Delaware in the U.S. Senate. She was elected in 2024 after serving four terms as Delaware’s sole representative in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the House, she served on the Houe Committee on Energy and Commerce, which oversaw health care, the environment, commerce and trade, energy policy and telecommunications. She is the leading voice in Congress on workforce issues, the future of work and building the economy. Lisa Rochester is a force for the common good and continues to impact society.
A’ja Wilson
A’ja Wilson continued to make waves in 2024, as one of the top players in women’s basketball and as a powerful advocate for social change. As the reigning WNBA MVP and a key player for the Las Vegas Aces, Wilson’s talent on her court remains unmated. She has helped lead her team to multiple championships, showcasing her exceptional skill, leadership and determination. Beyond her athletic achievements, Wilson is deeply committed to advocacy, in the areas of racial justice and women’s empowerment. She has used her platform to speak out on issues such as equal pay for women in sports, mental health awareness and racial inequality. A vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, Wilson has consistently advocated for more representation of Black women in sports and greater recognition of their contributions to the game.
Anok Yai
Anok Yai continued to make a significant impact in 2024 as one of the most influential models in the fashion industry. As the first Black model of Sudanese descent to walk for Prada, Yai has broken barriers and challenged traditional standards of beauty. Her rise to prominence has helped reshape the landscape of fashion, where diversity and inclusion have become more central than ever before. Beyond her work as a model, Anok is a passionate advocate for racial equality and representation in the fashion industry, speaking out against the industry’s tendency to marginalize Black models. She aims to highlight the importance of diversifying the faces on runways, in advertising and on magazine covers. Her efforts to create space for women of color have made her a trailblazer and a role model for aspiring models from all backgrounds.
Jasmine Crockett
Jasmine Crockett made significant contributions in 2024, further establishing herself as a rising star in American politics. Serving as a U.S. Representative for Texas, Crockett has quickly become known for her advocacy on issues such as criminal justice reform, civil rights and racial equity. Her passionate approach to addressing systemic inequality has made her a powerful voice in Congress, and she continues to work tirelessly for her constituents and marginalized communities across the country. Crockett has been an outspoken advocate for voting rights, affordable healthcare and economic justice, particularly for women and communities of color. She consistently uses her platform to call for transformative politics that prioritize the well-being of all Americans.
Cynthia Erivo
Cynthia Erivo continued to captivate audiences and make an indelible mark in 2024, cementing her place as one of the most talented and influential artists of her generation. As an actress, singer and activist, Erivo’s remarkable range has allowed her to excel in both the entertainment industry and in advocacy for social justice. Her powerful performances on stage and screen have earned her critical acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in “Harriet.” In 2024, Erivo’s artistry has expanded as she continues to take on diverse and challenging roles, like her role as Elphaba in the highly anticipated film adaptation of “Wicked.” Erivo’s casting as the iconic green witch is a groundbreaking moment in theater. Her portrayal of Elphaba was eagerly awaited by fans and critics alike, with her powerful voice and emotional depth promising to make her performance one of the most memorable in the history of the beloved musical.

Their impact reaches far beyond recognition and as we continue to uplift and support Black women, we must celebrate their achievements and commit to amplifying their voices, advocating for their rights and ensuring their legacies endure for generations to come.
