BSU honors Las Vegas victims with moment of silence

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Manual Black Student Union (BSU) held a moment of silence for the deadly U.S. shooting that occurred at a country music festival in Las Vegas this past weekend.

Students were advised to meet in center hall at 7:30 a.m. and to wear all black.

“We are wearing all black in solidarity with the citizens of Las Vegas,” Quincy Robinson (12, YPAS) said.

“Las Vegas was horrible,” President of BSU, Quintez Brown (12, HSU) said. “I feel like one moment of silence wasn’t enough. To show solidarity as a club to the victims, is very important because [the shooting] was a very senseless incident that should’ve never happened.”

Last week the BSU took a knee during the Pledge of Allegiance and at their weekly meeting, to protest injustice and lack of equality, they were inspired to do so from Colin Kaepernick as well as other NFL players.

The BSU has a plan

The BSU said they will continue doing small vigils, moments of silences and peaceful school protests throughout the year.

“I think we’re going to do more things like vigils,” Vice President, Kyra Welch (11, HSU) said. “We also want to do things for the community, help our kids, that way we can build a strong foundation early on, so when stuff like this happens, we don’t have to go scowling and have people rush together; we can all just come together as one big happy family.”

The BSU will have their next meeting Oct. 13 from 2:30-3:30 in the freshman cafeteria.
