WARNING: A FEW SPOILERS AHEAD
Released on Feb. 13, the movie “My Fault: London” symbolizes fast cars, adrenaline and romance. And so does its soundtrack.
“My Fault: London” is the English remake of the Spanish movie “Culpa Mia,” which is based on the book of the same title by Mercedes Ron. Starring Asha Banks as Noah and Matthew Broome as Nick, the movie follows Noah as she moves to London following her mom’s new marriage to William Leister. With her mom newly married, she adds both a stepdad and her new stepbrother, Nick, to her life. She is soon introduced to the other side of her new stepbrother’s life, a world of fancy, souped-up cars, boxing and partying.
Featuring 23 songs from a multitude of artists, like Conan Gray, Charli xcx, Biig Piig, Britney Spears and Troye Sivan, as well as 12 songs from its original motion picture score, the movie soundtrack can easily be played on repeat. With upbeat tempos and beats, quick and fast lyrics and all-around catchy and energizing tunes, “My Fault: London” is sure to take viewers along for Noah and Nick’s ride.
While all songs within the soundtrack immerse viewers effectively within their respective scenes and symbolize the themes surrounding the movie, there are a few specific songs that stand out.
1. “Bourgeoisies” by Conan Gray
After meeting her stepfather and stepping inside the mansion she now lives in, Noah sets out to explore the many luxurious rooms within the house, like a lavish library/sitting room, the garage filled with sports cars and her new room, which she is in disbelief over. Most importantly, however, as the song reaches its climax in the latter half of the scene, Noah sees Nick for the first time.
2. “Von dutch” by Charli xcx
After Nick forces Noah out of the car on the middle of a bridge in the center of London, his friend Zach picks her up to take her home. He “accidentally” tells her about the party that Nick is going to. In retaliation, Noah orders Zach to take her there, where she dumps a drink on Nick and takes to the dance floor with a drink of her own. The chaotic and upbeat lyrics and tempos of “Von dutch” heighten this scene as Noah realizes the party and the night have been nothing but normal.
3. “Oh No” by Biig Piig
As Noah is blindsided by the fact that there is more to Nick than meets the eye, she ends up googling him. She discovers he created a ridesharing app called Connect and dives more into his life on social media. During this scene, Noah is, as the song describes, “lonely, sitting and sink in the blue” while she hopes her long-distance boyfriend will call her. While this is one of the slower songs in the soundtrack, “Oh No” does this scene justice in that Noah takes her time reveling in the fact that she misjudged Nick. Noah also comes to realize that she actually likes Nick more than she thought she would.
4. “Better Off (Alone, Part III)” by Alan Walker, Dash Berlin and Vikkstar
During this song, Nick, Noah and their friends Lion and Jenna have a fun day at the beach in Ibiza while celebrating Nick’s twentieth birthday, emphasizing that “[T]his could be a good night for good times.” The song reinforces the change in Noah. Originally she thought she would be “better off alone,” but ultimately made the decision to embrace her new life and new friends, evidenced by her happiness in this scene. A fun night at one of the local clubs ensues where the group enjoys their time together.
5. “Rush” by Troye Sivan feat. PinkPantheress and Hyunjin of Stray Kids
“Rush” is a personal favorite of mine. Viewers first hear “Rush” during the club scene in Ibiza. After a somewhat intense conversation, Nick realizes that the positive choices he has recently made have been because of Noah’s influence, at which point the lyrics “You got my heartbeat racing” can be heard. The camera pans towards the dance floor, as the boys watch Noah and Jenna dance with others. Nick’s feelings and jealousy heighten as he “feels the rush.”
While these songs are five of 23 featured within the soundtrack of “My Fault: London,” all the songs serve the movie’s purpose by providing the audience a glimpse into the action-packed lives of two young adults finding themselves and burning brighter as they ride out their pasts together.
