Arguably one of the greatest voices in the music industry, Whitney Houston, is dead at age 48, the Associated Press has reported.
Whitney Houston, who’s known for her hits “I Have Nothing”, “The Greatest Love of All”, and most famously her cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”, died on February 11 according to her publicist, Kristen Foster. The cause and location of her death are unknown.
At the height of her fame, Houston was named the “queen of pop” within the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. During her career, Houston garnered 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, for a total of 415 career awards. She is one of the world’s best-selling music artist, selling over 170 million singles and albums worldwide. Her success carried her from music to movies, starring in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”
The latter part of Houston career was overshadowed by drug use and her high-profile marriage to Bobby Brown.
Her life and career served as a cautious inspiration to many aspiring vocalist around the world and even at YPAS.
Micah McClain, a vocal student, said, “I’m deeply saddened only because there was so much that could have been, but was never realized because of the way she chose to live her life. It’s truly a great loss, but with every death there is always a lesson to be learned.”
