Sandy extends college application deadlines

Hurricane Sandy, also known as Frankenstorm, caused many colleges to extend their deadline for Early Action and Early Decision applications.
Not all of the deadlines have been changed for everyone, though: many of the colleges have changed the deadline only for students that are affected by the storm.
For example, Yale states on its website, “Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy in the eastern United States, the Early Action application deadline has been extended to midnight on Monday, November 5 for students affected by the storm. This applies both to your own application as well as to supporting documents sent on your behalf.”
Other schools changed their deadlines for everyone because the storm directly affected the school and hindered the work of the admissions office. Columbia University stated on its website, “If you are interested in applying Early Decision to Columbia College or Columbia Engineering, please note that we are extending that deadline to Monday, November 5th given the inclement weather expected this week. We hope this helps to relieve some of the stress and anxiety you might be feeling as the storm approaches your region.”

Some colleges are extending other deadlines that fell on Nov. 1. St. Mary’s College of Maryland released a notice that stated, “The Office of Admissions at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is aware that the effects of Hurricane Sandy are making it difficult for applicants to meet the November 1 priority scholarship deadline and the November 1 Early Decision deadline. We are therefore extending both deadlines to Thursday, November 15. Please be certain to indicate on your Common Application form whether you are applying for scholarships, Early Decision, or both.”
