Manual’s Beta Club helps local elementary school

Members of Manual’s Beta Club have taken on a new service project: tutoring Cochran Elementary School students.

“They go after schools on Mondays and assist the students at Cochran with whatever school work they need help with,” said Ms. Dix, the Beta Club sponsor.

“I’m glad that Cochran is so close,” said Natasha Mundkur (10). “We don’t have to worry about getting rides there and back.”

These regular tutoring sessions come after Cochran earned some of the lowest elementary schools test scores in Jefferson County Public Schools, and in Kentucky. These low scores come after a new type of testing was enforced in the 2011-2012 school year. JCPS warned parents of these low scores back in August, stating that this new kind of test was unlike any standardized testing the county had had before, making it harder for the student to earn a distinguished or proficient.

“I feel that it’s a valuable experience for both the kids and I,” said Mundkur. “I have learned that I have a lot to offer to the children.”
