The latest Visual Arts magnet show “Prison Break” opened on Jan. 14 in the Norma E. Brown Gallery, showcasing the work of seniors Jordan Armstrong, Lilyan Bryan, Madeline Clements, Kenedie Collier, Ellis Fowler, Roncayle Hunter, Dorian Johnson, Madeleine Natalie, Jackson Rasco and Bria Steen.
Bryan said that the inspiration for this show’s theme originated from a desire to distinguish the exhibit from previous senior art galleries.
“We wanted to come up with a theme that we really liked, and we wanted to stray away from what the other people have been doing,” she said. “We thought it would be fun to make a graffiti wall, so that’s why we chose it.”
As is the case for all art shows, Bryan and her fellow seniors were responsible for crafting the show from start to finish, including creating the graffiti wall centerpiece and securing refreshments and themed music for the show’s opening.
Mr. Doug DeWeese (Visual Arts) has instructed all of this year’s VA seniors since the ninth grade.
“The coolest thing about the art show is that you get to see how the artists have grown from freshman year,” DeWeese said. “That’s what I really like to see, and what’s why I love the art shows.”
The show’s opening lasted from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Kitty Le (11, J&C) enjoyed visiting the gallery to see how her peers’ art has progressed throughout their high school careers.
“The cool thing is that I know some of these artists, and I have seen their art from when they were younger,” she said. “With the art show, you really get to see how your peers have matured along with their art.”
“Prison Break” will be on display in the Norma E. Brown gallery through Thursday, Jan. 28.
