Reagan Roy (12, J&C) was surprised during fourth block today with the presentation of a $25,000 national scholarship from the insurance company AXA. The award, which Roy received notification about two weeks ago, is bestowed upon 10 students every year based on demonstrated academic ambition, drive and service.
Roy said that he applied for the scholarship last fall after his family members and school counselor Ms. Amy Medley recommended it to him.
“When I opened the letter, I was astonished,” he said. “I read it twice because it’s hard to believe they chose to honor me with it. Today was a total surprise though, I had no idea it was going to happen. I was very grateful, but also shocked.”
Roy’s application focused on his various efforts to unite his community, including his creation of a local garden.
“The idea was that everyone could pitch in and work together toward the same goal, which was to combat childhood obesity and food deserts,” he said.
Roy plans to attend the JB School of Engineering at the University of Louisville next year.
