Playwrights debut work at New Works Festival this weekend

The annual New Works Festival will be held at YPAS in the Experimental Theatre on March 15th and March 16th at 7:30 p.m.

The festival features ten-minute plays submitted from Manual’s Playwriting class performed by YPAS actors, along with several song and dance performances crafted by Manual students.

Because of the large number of pieces, the festival is cut into two slates. The first slate will be done on Friday and the second slate on Saturday.

Griffin Cobb (11) is a playwright with a piece in the festival, but he is also an actor performing. “It’s a good setting, a good exposure for all of us,” he said.

The plays were directed by students in the Directing class at YPAS, and actors rehearsed with their directors in their own time. The teachers have very little to do with the production when compared to other plays at YPAS.

“New Works is an excellent way for young artists to get experienced in their craft,” said Abby Schroering (12), a playwright that was also a student director for the festival.
