AP Exam Registration Week Information

How to Register for AP Exams

Important Information for Testing Day

February 1, 2011

To the Parent of Advanced Placement (AP) students:

The week for students to register to take AP exams is February 21-25, 2011 in the Guidance Office College/Career Room from 7:30am-3:00pm. Students who plan to take an AP exam must register during the week of registration. The steps to register are as follows:

  1. The student completes the 2011 Advanced Placement Registration form—obtained in the Guidance Office or from the student’s AP teacher. Students must print their LEGAL NAME and all other needed information legibly to ensure accurate ordering/processing.
  2. Check/money orders only. The cost is $87/exam. Cash cannot be accepted. Make checks/money orders payable to duPont Manual High School.
  3. Student will go to the College/Career Room during the week of registration or will participate in early group registration in the teacher’s classroom (beginning Feb 1). Check with your child’s AP teacher to see if your child’s class will participate in early registration.

Students who must register with Ms. Teague in her office instead of going to the College/Career Room:

  • Students who are on Free/Reduced Lunch
  • Students who have an exam conflict
  • Students who may need a Late Exam that must be pre-approved by College Board

Reminders:

  • The AP US History and AP European History exams will be given on a day that students are not in school, Friday, May 6. This is an official test date set by the College Board. Students taking the US History exam are to report to the Manual auditorium by 7:30am on Friday, May 6. Students taking the European History exam are to report to the Manual auditorium by 11:30am on Friday, May 6.
  • AP Studio Art (2-D, 3-D, and Drawing) portfolios are due on April 29, 2011. Please make sure you discuss this early deadline date with your AP teacher and plan accordingly.

Advantages of taking the AP exam:

  • Saves the student college time and money.
Student has the potential to earn college credits while in high school by making a 3 or better on the AP exam (dependent on college choice). For example, one of our former students entered college as a junior, skipping two years of college and thousands of dollars, as a result of taking AP courses/exams.
  • Gives the student a head start on college.
It shows colleges that you are a serious student and capable of college-level work. Also, it gives the high school student the experience of taking a college-level course and exam.
  • Student stands out in the college admissions process.
Admissions counselors at many colleges and scholarships look at the number of AP courses and exams that a student takes in high school.
  • A 1999 U.S. Department of Education study found that the strongest predictor of college graduation is something students do before they enter college: participation in AP courses/exams. Students who take AP courses/exams are much more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years than non-AP students.
  • Earning college credit can allow the student to move into upper-level college courses sooner, pursue a double major, and gain time to study and travel abroard.
  • Manual benefits from our students taking AP courses/exams. We are one of the top schools in the nation based on our outstanding AP scores and the number of AP courses offered at Manual, which allows Manual to be well-known to colleges nation-wide.
