Todays Tech: Apple unveils the iPhone 5s and 5c

Today’s Tech: Apple unveils the iPhone 5s and 5c

Last Tuesday, Apple unveiled two new phones for the first time: the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c.

The iPhone 5s touts a brand new processor chip, the A7 chip, the first 64-bit processor chip ever for a smartphone. The new chip means faster load times for games, browsing the web, and multitasking, as well as high quality photos and videos.

The most notable addition is the fingerprint scanner, which is on the home button, that can read your fingerprint for different security reasons, such as unlocking your phone, and purchasing apps and music from the iTunes and app stores. It can store more than one fingerprint for guest profiles, friends and family to have access to your phone if you choose to allow it.

There aren’t many notable changes to the camera other than improvements to features such as burst mode, which can shoot ten photos a second, and an improved LED flash.

The considerably bigger announcement is the iPhone 5c, a cheaper, plastic, downgraded version of the 5s. The 5c comes in multiple colors, white, green, blue, pink, and yellow, and has a plastic cover in place of the usually metal design. Improved specs include a better front-facing camera and a slightly bigger battery.

With all the hype that Apple gets when they announce a new phone, these phones don’t live up to it. Sure they’re more powerful, and sure the 5s has one cool new feature. But with all the phones competing against it, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4, Apple is falling more and more behind every year.

The iPhone 5s will be priced at $200 upon upgrade from retailers with the 5c at a cheaper $100.
