Reagan Roy (10, J&C), who won the Louis Coleman Award from the Kentucky Center for African-American Heritage at the Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission Conference, was honored by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer by a declaration that today, Feb. 13, 2014, is “Reagan Patrick Roy Day.” Kyla Grant (12, J&C) was a finalist for the award.

To win the award, Roy wrote an essay and received the award for “furthering the commission’s goals of promoting unity, understanding, and equal opportunity while working to eliminate all forms of bigotry, bias and hatred from our community,” according to an email from Mr. Robinson (YPAS Counselor).

“I wrote an essay about my radio show, the two books I wrote for charity, and how I’m president of the Red Cross,” Roy said. “I didn’t think I was going to win. I thought I was just going to be a finalist or something.”

Roy learned he won the award while in his AP World class when he received a call from Ms. Medley (Counseling).

“I went down to Ms. Medley’s office and she told me about it and said it’s Reagan Roy Day and it was really cool,” said Roy. “It’s like my second birthday. I’m really honored.”
