Mr. Michael Crain (English) will sponsor Manual’s new chapter of Amnesty International for the 2014-2015 school year. The club plans to meet every Wednesday in room 202 and will advocate for human rights, both locally and nationally.
Manual’s Amnesty International club grew out of the existing Action for Africa.
“We’ve basically rebranded ‘Action for Africa’ into ‘Action for Everyone’,” said Mr. Crain.
“I joined Amnesty International because I want to make a contribution to the community on a global scale,” said Coleman Powell (11, MST). “If you want to take anything away from Amnesty International, it should be that the voice of the people can inspire change.”
Amnesty International is an non-governmental human rights organization based in the United Kingdom which aims to “conduct research and generate action to prevent abuses and demand justice for those whose rights have been violated,” according to the organization’s website. In the past, the organization has focused on human rights issues, such as abolishing the death penalty and closing the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay.
The club will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in room 202.
