On April 29, assistant principal Mr. Matthew Kingsley called unsuspecting students down to Center Hall for a group photo. That day was “Top Hats and Tiaras Day” and students were allowed to dress up in honor of the royal wedding. Unbeknownst to them, a cameraman from WHAS-11 was there to interview a few of them so they could run a story later that night.
Dressing up for the royal wedding was conceived by Ms. Diane Taylor (Spanish) as she was driving to school. She wanted to do something that would offer students a fun distraction from state testing, the SAT/ACT, AP testing, finals, and the constant rain. After principal Larry Wooldridge approved the idea, Ms. Taylor decided to offer her students extra credit for dressing up.
“When (Ms. Taylor) offered extra credit, I jumped on the opportunity,” said Kacie Waford (12).
Ms. Taylor’s intentions for offering extra credit were not purely for entertainment, but also had a purpose. She said she offered extra credit because there are “cross-credentials with the Spanish government in relation to the British government.”
Waford, one of the people who was interviewed by WHAS-11, felt that the interview was irrelevant. “I was surprised because I did not know it was going to be a big deal. I mean, the focus should have been on the royal wedding and not the kids who dressed up for extra credit,” she said.
