Manual’s Visual Arts magnet hosted the opening of their alumni art show at the Norma E. Brown Gallery on Sept. 3.

The exhibit spotlighted the work of VA alumni, who showcased their art to an audience of former teacher, other alumni and even current VA students.

Isaac Garr (10, VA) stopped by the show to see the work.

“The show is pretty cool, you can see different styles of art,” he said. “For example, if you’re a painter you can see different types of painting, and if you’re a photographer, you can see different styles of photography. This show is an example of how successful you can be after leaving VA.”

Doug DeWeese (Visual Arts) served as one of the main faculty coordinators of the event.

“The idea for the alumni show has been around for a couple of years,” DeWeese said. “The art faculty has a lot of contact with former students, and they seemed open to the idea. We thought the new renovations that were completed last year for the Norma E. Brown Gallery at Manual would be the perfect showcase for an Alumni Show in the new and improved gallery.”

DeWeese added that the gallery demonstrates to audience members what life after participation in the Visual Arts magnet can look like.

“We want to show how a visual art and problem solving education can benefit students in their college and career goals,” he said.

VA graduate Caitlin Kannapell visited the show with her baby.

“I actually studied math in college but now 13 years later I run a community arts organization here in Louisville with another Manual alumni,” she said.
