This Valentine’s Day, Manual’s Y-Club will host their third annual Cupcake Wars fundraiser for the YMCA World Service Campaign, which supports YMCA advocacy across the globe.

To participate in the competition, students may either work in teams to enter themed, homemade cupcakes for an eight dollar fee, or taste-test cupcakes for a five dollar fee. After a community vote, Y-Club will award prizes to the teams with the best-tasting and best-decorated cakes.

According to Y-Club president Clare Doyle (12, HSU), the club was able to raise about $850 through last year’s Cupcake Wars fundraiser, and they hope to continue to expand as more schools become involved.

“We definitely hope to keep growing because we’re getting more schools involved and a lot of schools with Y-Clubs around the area have signed up to come and bring cupcakes,” she said. “I don’t have a set monetary goal, but we’re definitely hoping to raise more and more money every year.”

Doyle said she appreciates the opportunity to connect with other students from around the city at the yearly Cupcake Wars.

“It’s always fun because you get to see kids you don’t get a chance to see very often come from all different schools,” she said. “It’s just a big group of people eating cupcakes and having fun.”

The annual fundraiser was initially conceived by 2013-2014 Y-Club president Jenna Farineau (Class of 2014) and her fellow club officers.

Megan Raisle (12, HSU) will be participating in Cupcake Wars for the third time tomorrow.

“I’ve been involved with Cupcake Wars since our first event, which was a major success even though it ended up being on a snow day,” she said. “It’s just a really fun way to spend some time with friends and raise money for the World Service fund.”

Y-Club is the Manual’s branch of the Kentucky YMCA Youth Association that participates in government and democracy-oriented activities such as Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) and Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA).

Students wishing to enter their desserts in the Cupcake Wars competition may sign up at this link. Taste-testers need not RSVP ahead of time. The competition itself will take place this Sunday, Feb. 14 from noon to 4 p.m. at 1100 E. Broadway, Louisville, Ky. 40204.
