New bakery on Bardstown Road

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, a second Carmen’s Cupcakes opened at 1401 Bardstown Road.

Carmen’s specializes in nut- and gluten-free pastries, frozen yogurt and vegan deserts. It also offers innovative and decorative deserts like cake pops, cupcake layer push pops, layered icing and cake with multiple colors.

“Carmen’s Cupcakes was pretty good and had really creative ideas. It was a little overpriced, but it’s worth it to support a local business,” Martha Gottbrath (10) said.

Single cupcakes are $2.50 and pastries $5.

Carmen’s is but one of the many new desert shops cropping up on Bardstown Road, but it represents the first business in the area to offer both baked confections and a frozen yogurt bar. “It’s more convenient because it’s just like a Sweet Cece’s and a Panera Bread at one location,” said Jackson Hull (10). “Now I don’t have to walk back and forth between the two.”

Not all customers, however, are pleased. “I don’t think Carmen’s Cupcakes is that special. It doesn’t have a great yogurt car, and the desserts are mediocre,” said Liam Robinson (12).

Carmen’s is open every day but Monday and opens at noon.
