On March 6, 2024, Trinity High School presented its spring musical “The Music Man”, featuring many young actors, singers and dancers. Because Trinity is an all boys school, they have to pull girls from across Louisville to participate in their productions. As a result, some of the most talented young girls in Louisville are selected to participate.
Trinity’s Department of Theatre Arts (DOTA) provides aspiring female artists with the opportunity to perform for the community, with different cast mates and teachers than they are used to. Grace Cuenca (9, YPAS) is a cast member of “The Music Man” and a freshman in the YPAS musical theater program.
“I’m glad that because I’m going to YPAS I get to study there and then whenever I go do other shows, other places I can apply what I’ve learned at YPAS there.” Cuenca said.
“I also like being able to have different opportunities at different places and not only being associated with YPAS but also being associated with Trinity and other places,” Cuenca said, expressing her appreciation for the opportunities Trinity DOTA has given her.
“They’re very inclusive there and they really support you.”
However, participating in a musical takes a lot of hard work. Cast members spend long hours at the theater rehearsing for opening night.
“You can’t be a procrastinator,” she said, “With the only free time you have, you have to work and do your homework with your extra time when you’re not doing anything.”
Everyone involved in a Trinity DOTA musical spends an enormous amount of time preparing for the shows, starting rehearsals right after school and not ending until late at night. The satisfaction of opening night makes it all worth it for Cuenca.
“I always get really excited for opening because I know that all the work I’ve been doing for the past three months is finally paying off,” Cuenca said. Cuenca, along with many other female artists in Louisville, are excited for the next Trinity DOTA musical to perform in.
