“Grease,” which originally opened in Chicago in 1971 has made its way onto the YPAS Main stage and is electrifying. This show travels through the lives of highschoolers Danny Zuko, played by Finnegan Broyles (10, YPAS) (Red Cast) and William Paxton (11, YPAS) (Pink Cast) and Sandy Olsson, played by Lena Hanson (12, YPAS) (Red Cast) and Bailey Evans (11, YPAS) (Pink Cast). The pair fell in love during the summer but are struggling to keep the flame alive in front of their peers.
The cast encompasses the nostalgic feel of the classic musical, but finds a way to make the show unique. Olivia Haddox (11, YPAS) who stars as Marty displays her powerful voice control and impressive use of the Midwest accent, singing “Freddy, my Love.”
Additionally, Jan, played by Love Eden (12, YPAS) (Red Cast) and Abigail Stansbury (11, YPAS) (Pink Cast), Sonny, played by Kyran Kennedy (10, YPAS) (Red Cast) and Milo Kroll (10, YPAS) (Pink Cast) and Doody, played by Grayson Boehm (12, YPAS), bring the comedic relief with quips and songs like “Mooning” and “Those Magic Changes.” However, it’s not just actors that make this show incredible.
One of the most iconic scenes from Grease takes place in the Frosty Palace Diner, which the YPAS tech crew has built to perfection. This set adds to the retro feeling with classic diner colors and checkered flooring. In addition, the costumes are identical to those in the movies, from the slick biker jackets, to the Pink Ladies and even the kimono worn by Marty.
This musical is a must-see. Not only are some of the musicals most popular songs in this show, but the professionalism and flair of YPAS cannot be missed. Grease will most certainly be a thrill for all ages due to the cast’s chemistry, hilarious acting and emotion. YPAS’s Grease will have six showings, three of each cast, on Nov. 15-16 and 22-23. To purchase tickets, visit the YPAS website.
“If you’re having fun, you’re number one,” Noah Crase (11, YPAS), as Vince Fontane, said.
