It’s almost a cliché at this point: Louisville gets minutes of rain and massive wind gusts and ends up with a week of cleanup.

On August 13 around 5:30 PM, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service for Jefferson County. By 6 PM, people began losing power, and by 6:30 the rain had passed and the sun came out. The signs of the storm were everywhere: wet asphalt, tree limbs everywhere, and the faint sound of sirens in the distance.

Zachary Meeks-Steiger (12) was lucky enough to be at a friend’s house when his home in Germantown lost power. “The lights flickered and then we heard a transformer blow, and then everything went down,” Meeks-Steiger said. His plan for the remainder of the storm was to “play board games and hang out by candlelight.”
