In the last few weeks, the Louisville community has experienced historic flooding. Many businesses, individuals and families are displaced or are dealing with flood damage. Many are in need of housing or financial aid. There are many options available for those looking to become involved and help to heal the Louisville community.
Starting Saturday April 19, Louisville’s clean up crews will begin restoring the city. Volunteers of all ages should meet these crews at TurfMutt Great Lawn, 231 Witherspoon Street. The cleanup lasts from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. Brightside Foundation Inc. is hosting another clean up available to the public on Saturday the 19th as well.
For those whose residences were damaged by the flooding, Goodwill Industries of Kentucky is providing vouchers to these areas: Bowling Green, Corbin, Elizabethtown, Louisville, Morehead, Paducah, Pikeville and Somerset. One voucher is available per household and is only redeemable at Goodwill locations. To receive a voucher, a resident must provide an ID at a local Goodwill Opportunity Center.
Another organization that is doing their part is the American Red Cross Kentucky Region. The Red Cross has been distributing emergency supplies and clean up kits to families in need. For those in need of shelter, visit the American Red Cross Kentucky’s website.
Those who would like to donate to the flood recovery effort can donate online or by mail to Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund. Donations to the fund are tax deductible and donors are ensured to receive a receipt. Kroger’s Louisville Division is now asking Kentucky and Indiana customers to round up their purchases to put towards flood recovery as well. This option will last until May 3. Kentucky State University has opened sites for citizens affected to pick up necessary supplies such as bottled waters, hygiene products and non-perishable foods.
From the American Red Cross to Kentucky State University, the options to help the Kentucky community are unlimited. Whether through donations or volunteer work, every little bit is helpful and appreciated.
