Former YPAS teacher Brian Hinds has been sentenced to federal prison for 12 years and seven months for three counts of child pornography distribution and one count of possession of child pornography. His sentence will be followed by a 15-year term of supervised release. He is required to pay $26,500 in restitution to the victims of his crimes. The federal prison system does not provide opportunities for parole, meaning Hinds will have to serve the entire sentence.
Hinds was arrested in October 2025 after sending child pornographic material to undercover law enforcement. A subsequent investigation revealed no current or former Manual students were identified in the 3,326 images or 65 videos in Hinds’ possession. However, the files contained materials involving young children, the youngest of which being a 6-year-old boy.
Manual students in need of support can find information at the counseling office on the first floor or on the Manual counseling website. Students can email their counselor directly to request a meeting or can let a teacher know that they would like to speak to a counselor.
Hinds faced a minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of 40 years.
“Outwardly, Hinds appeared to dedicate his life to educating and helping children but under the cloak of darkness and perceived anonymity he was disgustingly betraying his profession and the public’s trust by distributing disgusting child sexual abuse materials,” U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner said. “Hinds has earned every last minute of his 151 month sentence.”
