Manual’s girls’ varsity basketball team defeated the Portland Christian Eagles yesterday with a final score of 73-25.

Prior the the start of the game, Ashlinn James (10, #13) was recognized for scoring her 1,000th career point.

Though the Lady Crimsons were not able to get the ball during tip-off, Manual’s defense blocked the ball, taking it down to the other side of the court. From there, Ashlinn James (10, #13) scored the first two points of the game. Shortly after, Electra Lovely-Tolbert (11, #4) scored the first of many three-pointers of the game.

The Lady Crimsons’ offense quickly dominated after that, limiting Portland Christian’s movement. A timeout was then called by Portland Christian with a few minutes left in the first quarter. It did little to stop the Crimsons’ momentum, as they were able to score a few more buckets. Lots of rebounds, steals and blocks by the Lady Crimsons resulted in a long scoring drought by Portland Christian. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 25-5, Manual.

After a relatively strong start by Portland Christian in the second quarter, Manual fired back with a three-pointer by Brooklyn Davis (10, #24) and Bailey Fetcher (9, #35). Soon after, Lovely-Tolbert had several more successful three-pointers and the offense went on a long scoring streak. After only scoring five points during the second quarter, Portland Christian called another timeout with a few minutes to go in the first half.

Again, though, it did little to falter Manual. At the last second before the end of the first half, Kendall Hemmerle (9, #12) scored for the Crimsons, increasing their lead to 39 points. The score at the half was 49-10.

At the start of the second half, Fetcher (9, #35) was the first to score for the Lady Crimsons. Davis (10, #24) also made another successful three-pointer. Portland Christian then gained a little momentum, firing off a few three-pointers and gaining a few free-throw points off of fouls committed by Manual. On the flip side, Manual also increased their lead yet again off of fouls committed by Portland Christian.

By the end of the third quarter, Manual led Portland Christian 65-18.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Portland Christian continued to fight. A couple of three-pointers helped the Eagles gain some confidence but it was struck down by a dominating Lady Crimson offense and defense. Shaila Cross (10, #5) shot a successful three-pointer allowing Manual to break 70 points. Davis (10, #24) made another three-pointer yet again.

Shortly after, time ran out and Manual won with a final score of 75-23.

The Lady Crimsons are now 5-0 and will play Ballard this Friday at six.
