Last Thursday, at Tom Sawyer Park, Manual’s boys’ tennis team fought in a series of intense matches, highlighted by senior Jake Olash’s (12, HSU) standout performance on his special night.
As the team’s only senior, Olash stepped into the spotlight with energy and focus. Facing a challenging opponent, Olash had to adjust to a slow-paced style that made it difficult to find rhythm early.
Despite that, he stayed composed and battled through a long, physically demanding match. After building an early 5–2 lead and holding off a late push, Olash secured a hard-fought straight-set victory, 6–2 and 7–5.
Manual saw mixed results in the singles play. Marian Whitfield (10, HSU) fell to his opponent in a tough match, 6-1 and 6-2. Andrew Zhang (10, MST), however, dominated his opponent with an impressive 6–0 win on both sets, showing control from start to finish.
The team found more success in the doubles competition. The pair, Leon Guo (9, MST) and Pratham Tipp (10, MST) defeated their opponents 6–2 in both sets. Another Manual duo earned a strong win over a duo from Waggner, 6–1, 6–0. In the third doubles match, Manual’s last team contributed to a commanding 6–0 victory on both their sets.
Following the match, coach Ken Stovall reflected on the significance of the night and Olash’s performance.
“We celebrated J. Olash on senior night tonight. Jake got a big win. He got to go out the way he deserved to—on top,” Stovall said. “And the season’s not over yet. We have regionals next week and one more match tomorrow against Trinity. But as for today, today was a great way to celebrate Jake.”
With momentum building and postseason play approaching, Manual looks to carry this energy forward.
